Getting Your House Ready for the Movers

Moving day is approaching, and soon your professional movers will arrive to transport your belongings to your new home. To ensure everything goes smoothly and efficiently, a little preparation on your part can make a world of difference. Here’s your guide to getting your house ready for movers so you can have a stress-free experience.

1. Declutter and Downsize in Advance

The golden rule of moving is: don’t pay to move things you don’t want or need! Weeks before moving day, go through every room. Donate, sell, or discard items you no longer use. The less you have, the faster and potentially cheaper your move will be.

2. Finish All Packing (or Clearly Designate)

If you’re doing your own packing, make sure it’s all done before the movers arrive. Clearly label every box with its contents and the room it belongs in at the new house. If EZ Moving is handling some packing, ensure items to be packed by us are clearly separated from what you’ve already packed yourself.

3. Disassemble Large Furniture (If You Choose To)

Movers can disassemble and reassemble furniture, but if you want to save a little time on moving day, you can take apart beds, tables, and other large items beforehand. Just make sure to keep all screws and hardware in clearly labeled bags attached to the furniture itself!

4. Clear Walkways and Access Points

Ensure a clear path for your movers. Remove any rugs, mats, or obstacles from hallways, stairwells, and entryways. If it’s a wet or snowy day, lay down protective coverings to keep floors clean and safe. This also helps prevent accidental slips or trips for your crew.

5. Create a “No-Pack” Zone

Designate a specific area (like a bathroom or a small closet) for items you’re transporting yourself. This includes valuables, important documents, medications, personal hygiene items, and your “first-night box.” Inform your movers clearly that these items are not to be packed or loaded onto the truck.

6. Prepare Appliances

If you’re moving appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, or dryers, ensure they are disconnected, drained (if applicable), and cleaned. Defrost refrigerators and freezers at least 24-48 hours in advance.

7. Think About Parking and Access

Consider where the moving truck will park. Clear the driveway and any street space needed. If you’re in an apartment building, reserve the loading dock or elevator if required. Good access means a quicker, smoother loading process.

8. Be Present and Ready

On moving day, be present and available to answer any questions the movers might have. Walk through the house with the foreman before they start and after they finish to confirm everything is accounted for.

A little preparation goes a long way in making moving day efficient and stress-free. By getting your house ready for movers, you set the stage for a seamless relocation to your new home.
